Global economic crisis will continue to drive the demand for gold and silver worldwide, with appetite for the yellow metal likely to pick up in India in the second half of 2016 on the back of festive season and Pay Commission award, industry experts said. The demand for gold in the domestic market is expected to pick up in the second half of 2016 after a dismal first half, they said. High unofficial imports, elevated price, imposition of excise duty and subsequent strike by jewelers had impacted gold demand in the first half. "Demand is expected to come back and price discounts are expected to narrow from October. "The overall demand is expected to remain around 380 to 400 tonnes for the second half of calendar year 2016 on account of increase in farmer incomes, salary arrears to Central government employees under 7th Pay Commission and festive demand," Foretell Business Solutions, Head of Bullion Research, Debajit Saha said in a statement here. He added that gold demand remained extremely poor in the first half of the current year. Market had entered into deep discount zone, impacting official supply of gold.

Gold stays up on global cues, jewellers' buying - CommodityMarketTips.Com

Gold prices advanced for a second day by gaining Rs 55 to Rs 31,130 per 10 grams at the bullion market today, tracking a firming trend overseas amid increased buying by jewellers to meet rising demand from retailers at domestic spot market. Silver also recovered by Rs 500 to Rs 47,000 per kg due to increased offtake from coin makers and other consuming industries. Traders said a firming trend overseas where gold advanced amid speculation that the US central bank will be slow to raise interest rates, with investors counting down to the release of the Federal Reserve's minutes of its July meeting as the dollar declined, mainly buoyed the sentiment here. Globally, gold rose 0.6 percent to USD 1,347.16 an ounce and silver by 0.56 percent to USD 19.85 an ounce in Singapore. Besides, an increased buying by jewellers to meet festive season demand from retailers at domestic spot markets supported the upside, they said.

Gold holds weaker after China trade data, copper gains as surplus widens

Gold prices held lower in Asia on Monday, but copper gained as investors digested trade data from China that showed a wider than expected surplus. but downbeat imports. In China, the trade balance for July is expected at a surplus of $47.6 billion, with exports down 3.0% and imports down 7.0%, both year-on-year. China is the world's top copper importer and second largest gold buyer behind India. China said trade balance for July came in at a surplus of $52.31 billion, better than $47.6 billion expected, with exports down 4.4%, below the 3.0% fall seen and imports showing a 12.5% decline, far worse than the down 7.0% seen, both year-on-year. Earlier in Japan, the adjusted current account came in at ¥1.65 trillion, well below the surplus of ¥3.20 trillion for July expected. Bank lending rose 2.1%, beating the expected 2.0% gain. In China, FX reserves came in at CNY3.2 trillion, meeting expectations. Gold for December delivery on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange fell 0.21% to $1,341.55 a troy ounce. Also on the Comex, silver futures for September delivery eased 0.69% to $19.680 a troy ounce. Copper futures for September delivery rose 0.51% to $2.171 a pound. Oil prices fell in Asia on profit-taking today following two days of gains, with concerns about a global oversupply keeping optimism in check. The losses come despite a rally across regional stock markets after the Bank of England announced an interest rate cut -- the first since 2009 -- and surprise stimulus to shore up the economy after Britain's vote to leave the EU. At about 0355 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 36 cents, or 0.83 percent, at USD 41.57 and Brent was 40 cents, or 0.90 percent, down at USD 43.89. The commodity rose around six percent over Wednesday and Thursday an energy report showing US gasoline stockpiles had slipped last week. However, the gains came after both contracts had fallen into a bear market, having lost 20 percent from recent highs above USD50 seen in early June. Prices dropped below USD 40 a barrel on Monday, the first time since April. "We've had a strong turnaround at a key level near USD 40 a barrel and that means the risks for crude in the short-term appear to be to the upside," Michael McCarthy, a chief strategist at CMC Markets in Sydney told Bloomberg News. "It now looks like a potential return to a point between USD 44 and USD 45 is the most likely outcome." CMC Markets senior sales trader Alex Wijaya said told AFP that "other than the USD 40 technical floor to oil, the dip in prices could also be due to profit-taking from short-selling after Wednesday's (stockpiles) data pushed prices up". "Taking all this into consideration, the market is now trying to find a fair value spot, a rebalance," Wijaya said. "Going forward, all eyes will be on demand in China and Asia." Investors will be watching the release later Friday of US July jobs data, which will give a fresh look a the world's top economy and oil consumer.
